Alphonse Mucha: In Quest of Beauty will feature works from the Mucha Foundation alongside several key pieces from Glasgow’s own collection, including rarely seen works by Mackintosh, George Logan and Jessie M King. It runs from Saturday 8 October 2016–19 February 2017.
The collaborative nature of this touring exhibition, designed and curated by The Mucha Foundation in Prague, has enabled Glasgow Museums to re-examine its collection in the light of Mucha’s aesthetic and philosophical concerns and to explore the connections that were revealed. At Kelvingrove Museum visitors are invited to explore the interesting links between the more familiar ‘Glasgow Style’ and ‘Le Style Mucha’, both of which evolved and became synonymous with the international Art Nouveau style.
Alphonse Mucha: In Quest of Beauty will show some 80 works drawn from the collection of the Mucha Trust, alongside 13 works from Glasgow Museums’ collection. Curators from both organisations have collaborated to present a beautiful, stimulating exhibition.
The exhibition examines Mucha as an artist and designer, a photographer, draughtsman and champion of the Czech people, by looking at his theatrical posters and advertising designs, together with his commercially successful series of decorative panels. Alphonse Mucha’s designs, featuring appealing women with long flowing hair and bohemian costumes, are iconic and timeless.
Alphonse Mucha: In Quest of Beauty opens at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow on 8 October and runs until 19 February 2017. Tickets cost £5 per adult and £3 per concession, children under 16 are free.
