It is 21 years since the sit-in organised by the local community saved the Kinning Park Neighbourhood Centre. Come join us for a parade on the 16th of July celebrating the power of collective voice! MARCH ON is an event aiming to increase awareness of sustainable support structures, self-organisation and the importance of activism in today’s society.
Kinning Park Complex is an independent multi-use community centre, run by the community since they had to step in to prevent closure of the facility by the local Council. Today, we know that their protest was successful, but back then it wasn’t that obvious that their objection wouldn’t be repressed, similarly to several other examples of self-organised resistance in Glasgow.
The March is part of the ‘KPC is 21’ Birthday Festival. We welcome EVERYONE to participate. Meeting time for the march is 10.45am and we will start at 11am. The parade will last approximately 30 minutes, walking from the corner of Govan Road and Pacific Drive to the Kinning Park Complex on Cornwall Street. We will have tea, coffee and snacks plus an exhibition in our downstairs hall commemorating local examples of civic resistance and a display of photographs, newsletters and other insights from KPC history from over the years.
We will have a tasty BBQ from our resident Mad Chef and our amazing team of kitchen volunteers from 1pm. We will also be across the road in Plantation Park from 1-4pm with live music from Anton & The Colts, Steve Grozier, Sean Walker, Natalie Clark and The Govan All Sorts Choir. As well as that we will have craft workshops for kids and adults. Plus a therapy tent with free massages.
During the week there will be an exhibition in our downstairs hall, plus building tours which will give you an opportunity to learn about the history of Kinning Park Complex. Our Thursday Community Meal on the 20th of July will feature a special screening of a short film called 'You Play Your Part' about female activists in the Govan area which was made by Plantation Productions (SCIO) and filmmaker Kirsten MacLeod. We will also have John Cooper from Castlemilk Against Austerity to give a presentation on the importance of community activism.
