About John MacFarlane: At the Edge of The Wings - Theatre and Costume Drawings & Paintings
Stage, Set & Costume Designer and Artist. First Scottish Solo exhibition since graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1970.Compass gallery is presenting a special exhibition for one of Glasgow School of Arts most successful graduates, John MacFarlane. John is regarded as one of the world’s leading designers for Opera and Ballet and has international status. This solo show demonstrates his crossover into the visual arts and will be his first Scottish exhibition.
Throughout his career he has continued with his painting and drawing practices. At this stage in his career he wishes to develop his skills as a fine art practitioner of drawing and painting. Often a transition is difficult to make so Compass Gallery, where he first began exhibiting his drawings in the New Generation Show immediately after graduating from Glasgow School of Art, it seems fitting that his first Scottish exhibition takes place here in Glasgow particularly when the city is focusing on the Visual Arts and its creative sons and daughters.
John has pursued parallel careers in painting and theatre design. He is regarded as one of the world's leading designers for opera and ballet, having worked for all the major opera and ballet companies. He has exhibited his paintings and design drawings throughout Europe, and his work is highly collectable and this display of hi new work sees a change of emphasis, so While there are some opera designs in the show, the great majority of the exhibition is given over to his paintings.
Macfarlane’s eminence in the opera design world means he can pick and choose which, and how many, productions he takes on in any given year. This has allowed him to re-evaluate his work schedule and recently he has taken more time to concentrate on his love of oil painting.
He is a most unusual artist, having pursued parallel careers in painting and theatre design, and he is now regarded as one of the world’s leading designers for opera and ballet.
In his ‘other life’ he’s exhibited his paintings and design drawings throughout Europe, becoming one of the most collectable of contemporary artists/designers. His work hangs in many prestigious public collections, including National Museum Wales; the V & A, London; the Albertina, Vienna; Hunterian Museum, Glasgow; the Archive of L’Opera, Paris and the Collection of the Metropolitan Opera House, New York.
