Living proof of the close-knit kinship, both literal and musical, between Ireland and western Scotland, the Donegal-Glaswegian Friel sorority – Anna, Sheila and Clare, on flutes, whistles, uilleann pipes, fiddle, harmonica and unison singing – have long been known as luminous talents by both countries’ folk cognoscenti. “They breathe music, they live music, they love music,” says Altan’s Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh.
Eventually, inevitably, they’ve become an actual band, with a self-titled debut album in 2014, and now its follow-up’s launch tonight.
