About The Music of Laura Nyro feat. Diane Garisto & Guests

When cult-heroine New York singer/songwriter Laura Nyro died in 1997, aged just 49, Elton John was one of many high-profile fans to pay tribute, recalling “the soul, the passion, just the out-and-out audacity of her rhythmic and melody changes – it was like nothing I’d heard before.” Managed by a young David Geffen, and signed to Columbia at 20, in 1967 - alongside Dylan, The Byrds, Leonard Cohen, Santana and Spirit – Nyro seemed set for major stardom, but a mix of wayward idiosyncrasy and chronic stage-fright saw her songs’ best-known versions recorded by other artists, including Barbra Streisand, Peter, Paul and Mary, Three Dog Night and 5th Dimension. Nyro’s groundbreaking influence, however, endures in successors like Rickie Lee Jones, Patti Smith, Kate Bush and Tori Amos.

Hosted by former Nyro backing singer Diane Garisto, this celebratory tribute features a band of top-notch Big Apple session players and singers, plus other very special guests, performing songs from throughout Nyro’s nine-album career.
