Already lauded for both her solo work and her role in The Magnetic North, Northern Irish singer/composer Hannah Peel has won huge acclaim for her 2017 album Mary Casio: Journey to Cassiopeia. A seven-movement suite charting an imagined octogenarian’s odyssey from Barnsley to outer space, it sets Peel’s hauntingly delicate voice amid analogue synths, vintage instruments, found sounds and a 30-piece brass band. “Skyscraping talent... one of modern electronic music's most enquiring and captivating minds.” (The Skinny)
Those massed horns are the work of Tubular Brass, an innovative ensemble formed by Scotsman Sandy Smith, to develop brass-band music for contemporary audiences. Its eponymous inaugural project was Smith’s ambitious reworking of Mike Oldfield’s landmark 1973 album Tubular Bells, which he conducts again here, together with a live rendition of Mary Casio – a double bill hailed by The Arts Desk’s reviewer as “A perfect concert - the most satisfying live musical event I’ve attended in years”.
