With Tom Petty’s recent untimely death, the world lost one of its most iconic songwriters, whose sweeping creative reach encompassed myriad rock, pop and roots influences, harnessed behind memorable melodies and gritty lyrical economy. The sixth Roaming Roots Revue - again curated by Roddy Hart, with The Lonesome Fire as house band - pays tribute with a lavish transatlantic cast, performing newly-arranged Petty covers alongside their own material.
US visitors include Natalie Prass, likened by Rolling Stone to “an indie-rock Dusty In Memphis”; T Bone Burnett protégée Lera Lynn; hauntingly tender harmonies from Cory Chisel and Adriel Denae; mandolin prodigy turned stunning singer-songwriter Sierra Hull, and the coolly incisive eloquence of Alela Diane. Also crossing the Pond are Nova Scotia’s Joel Plaskett, in his folky solo guise, and British Columbian roots-rocker Leeroy Stagger, while from Sweden comes recent Bella Union signing Susanne Sundfør. The UK contingent features Londoner Nerina Pallot’s elegant observational balladry, and Scottish electro/indie-pop favourite Pictish Trail.
