Originally taught by the late great Donald Riddell, Inverness-born fiddler Sarah-Jane Summers went on to gain a master’s degree in Norwegian traditional music and free improvisation, at Oslo’s State Academy of Music.
Now living in Norway, she’s fascinated by the musical and linguistic links between her home and adoptive countries, and the human stories they embody. Her New Voices composition comprises a sequence of instrumental pieces, each inspired by an everyday Scottish word of Old Norse origin, while the various nationalities of her six-piece ensemble – Scottish, English, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish; on fiddles, guitars, accordion, trumpet, double bass and electronics – further expand her themes of connection and communication.
