For the multi-award-winning Scottish harpist and composer Ailie Robertson - currently studying for a PhD in contemporary composition, and recently chosen for the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Young Composers Programme - a primary musical mission is to explore and build upon her instrument’s full sonic potential, far removed from pretty drawing-room stereotypes.
Featuring harp, string quartet and electronics, her New Voices commission, Seven Sorrows, inspired by the Gaelic grief ritual of keening, draws on all her diverse experience and influences, including her love of improvisation.
With Robertson playing the harp’s entire body as well as its strings, her multi-textured soundscapes interweave strands from the traditional to the avant-garde.
