This conference will consider the impact of important transitions within the care system and the anxieties they raise. It will highlight recent qualitative research focusing on children’s perceptions and feelings, and also the way in which the use of ‘key principles’ for foster carers and adopters may facilitate this process.
An exploration of clinical work will provide the opportunity to consider the complexities of finding an ‘emotional home’ for children and young people who have experienced neglect, trauma or multiple moves.
The conference will also emphasise the importance of foster or adoptive parents and practitioners having the emotional capacity to fully understand children’s experiences and be available to help them ‘re-imagine’ past attachments and identifications and to then successfully establish new relationships.
