Led by Artistic Director Cassa Pancho, Ballet Black celebrates dancers of black and Asian descent, showcasing technique, precision and grace in specially commissioned pieces.
The company performs The Suit and A Dream Within A Midsummer Night’s Dream, at Tramway on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 June.
In October 2017, Ballet Black made their Tramway debut with a Triple Bill including Storyville.
The new performances at leading international space Tramway stars a new ballet by renowned British chorographer Cathy Marston based on South African writer Can Themba’s moving fable, The Suit, which was banned by the then apartheid regime on its publication.
This work is paired with acclaimed Portuguese choreographer, Arthur Pita’s Olivier nominated A Dream Within A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The piece mixes classical and contemporary to distil the essence of Shakespeare’s comedy, unfolding to an eclectic soundtrack that includes Eartha Kitt, Barbra Streisand and Yma Sumac, a soprano famed for her extreme vocal range.
British-Trinidadian Artistic Director Cassa Pancho has attracted a loyal following for her classically trained troupe, reinvigorating ballet with an indomitable energy and inspired versatility as well as promoting original work.
Councillor David McDonald, Chair of Glasgow Life and Deputy Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “Ballet Black’s Double Bill looks set to be a highlight of the summer for dance lovers in Glasgow, with two pieces incorporating elements of classical and contemporary dance.
“Alongside commissioning and presenting work from choreographers and performers based in the city, Tramway continues to bring leading UK and international dance artists to Glasgow, to entrance and exhilarate.”
Cassa Pancho MBE, Founder & Artistic Director, Ballet Black, said: “Everyone here at Ballet Black is delighted to be returning to Tramway this year. Glasgow is one of the company's favourite city's and we can't wait to share our new double bill with audiences in Scotland!”
Tramway is supported by Glasgow City Council and Creative Scotland.
