Saturday Art School Ages 5 – 8

This course will develop a wide range of skills in drawing, printmaking and sculpture. It is jam packed with exciting projects, encouraging children to experiment with different materials and ideas to stimulate their creative development, offering a variety of fun and engaging drawing and making techniques.

The initial class will focus on printing with nature, using dried leaves and organic objects to create a layered mono print. Moving on from that, we will look at a variety of textures and patterns in still life objects, children will create their own still life, selecting pattern and fruits with interesting shapes, learning how to record detail through analytical drawing using a variety of lines. We will also be looking at exotic animals to create fantastic colourful Mexican inspired masks. Children will begin this task by drawing their chosen exotic animal before making the base of the mask from cardboard and building up shape and texture, finally painting and adorning it with magical finishing touches!

The next project will be learning how to marble paper as a background on which to print collagraphs, which the children will also learn how to make, creating a beautiful mixed media piece combing two techniques of marbling and printing.

The final project will be looking at the work of Matisse and inspired by sea weed and organic objects, children will draw these then create colourful mixed media artworks using some of the techniques they have already learned such as printing and collage to make their very own Matisse inspired art work.

The course has been designed with tasks and skills that will engage young minds and keep them motivated and enthusiastic by covering tasks with outcomes that lead to finished pieces every few weeks that they can proudly take home and display.

Saturday Art School Ages 9 – 12

The initial class will focus on using collage techniques to build a character or portrait- some that can literally come off the page! Moving on from that, we will have an experimental drawing workshop and use different styles of large scale drawing- from Matisse’s line drawings to Manga! We will use printing techniques to create repeated pieces that play with colour and layering. Following this, we will look at animation techniques and learn to make a flip-book and animation.

For the next project we will look at building scenery, examining how this is done through a diverse set of references- from classical landscape painting and popular cartoons to avant garde theatre, the Bauhaus, and fashion set-design. Participants will design and make a painted backdrop and build props and masks.

The final project will look to bring together the skills we’ve learned, making a final storybook that will use a combination of the work and techniques built up in the previous weeks. Each participant will use their preferred skill or method to build this storybook, creating something unique and individual to them.

The course has been designed to engage young people’s imaginations in storytelling, thinking differently and creatively about how to present ideas through a diverse and enjoyable range of tasks and techniques.

While we take every opportunity to ensure the details for Saturday Art School are accurate, we always advise that you contact the event organiser before setting out for the event to avoid disapointment.
