World War 1 Commemoration Day
Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum will host a day-long programme of events on Sunday 11th November to commemorate the centenary of World War I.
About World War 1 Commemoration Day
Sorry, but this event has been and gone!
The museum will open early, at 10.30am, to allow visitors to observe the minutes silence at 11am. Afterwards Scottish Youth Theatre will read Letters from the Trenches, Roddy MacLeod MBE, Principal of The National Piping Centre and one of the world’s most accomplished solo pipers, will play and a male voice choir will join with instrumentalists to perform a musical commemoration of the First World War.
The event is the culmination of a four year programme of events, exhibitions, displays, talks and workshops curated by Glasgow Museums to mark the 100th anniversary of World War I. The day is intended to allow people to reflect on the First World War and provide a way to commemorate this hugely significant occasion.
Opening early at 10.30am the day's events will include:
1 minute's silence of remembrance for those that fought in The Great War
Hourly from 11am to 2pm (4 performances) Letters from the Trenches
In partnership with the Scottish Youth Theatre, Kelvingrove Museum will present a series of moving and evocative letters and poems detailing what life was really like in the trenches of WWI. Performed by three young actors from the Scottish Youth Theatre in the lower ground floor exhibition gallery, currently hosting “Brushes with War: Art from the Frontline 14-18”.
1.30pm Bagpipe Recital
Performed by Roddy MacLeod of The National Piping Centre – a piobaireachd written to commemorate one of the worst maritime disasters in United Kingdom history.
3-4pm Organ and Choral Concert
A male voice choir of 100 voices will perform a medley of songs from WW1 including Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag; It’s long way to Tipperary; Roses in Picardy; Over There; Keep the home fires burning and many more.
While we take every opportunity to ensure the details for World War 1 Commemoration Day are accurate, we always advise that you contact the event organiser before setting out for the event to avoid disapointment.
