The workshop aims to uncover new understandings on the theme of belonging by:
• Examining current thinking around how ‘a culture of belonging’ contributes to student learning, retention and resilience
• Exchanging experiences of alienation and belonging in educational situations
• Investigating how current polarising political, social, economic and ecological tensions mitigate against free speech and are detrimental to a culture of belonging
• Proposing practical strategies to promote an inclusive culture of belonging for everyone.

Ruth Jackson is an integrative psychotherapist who recently moved to Glasgow from Ireland. Her background is in adult education. She taught social science and social policy in London for many years before returning to Belfast. Working for the Open University in Ireland she became responsible for delivering pastoral services to students on both sides of the border. In recent years she trained as a psychotherapist and worked with clients in community-based settings in West Belfast. In Glasgow her client work is based with Southside Counselling.
Mary MacCallum Sullivan
Mary's background is in psychotherapy and counselling education and training, at post-graduate level, as teacher, team leader and manager. She has experience of working with a wide range of clients. Co-author with Harriett Goldenberg of Cradling the Chrysalis: Teaching/Learning Psychotherapy (2015) UKCP/Karnac, editor of Unconscious Communication In Practice (1999) Open University Press, and co-editor with Bernard Burgoyne of The Klein-Lacan Dialogues (1997) Rebus Press.
