Women and Sport in Interwar Scotland

About Women and Sport in Interwar Scotland

We’re excited to announce a series of talks that have been programmed alongside Callum Rice’s solo exhibition The Failing Light but Polmadie Shines on display in the Studio Pavilion at House for an Art Lover. This series delivered by a variety of academics, writers, artists and historians aims to expand upon some of Callum’s research interests as well as provide an insight into a variety of subjects touched upon by the exhibition.

We kick off the programme with Dr Fiona Skillen on 01 May 2019.

‘She hits the golf ball as far as a man and is equally good at tennis: Women and sport in interwar Scotland.’

Dr Fiona Skillen will talk about the rich history of women’s participation in sport in Scotland and debunk the myth that women’s sport is a modern phenomenon. Focusing on the period 1919-1939, a time when women arguably took up new sports in greater numbers than ever before she’ll discuss how women of all different backgrounds and ages were playing sports as diverse as hockey, tennis and even football in locations all over Glasgow, from factories to local swimming baths and from schools to local parks. Her talk will also touch upon the effective ban of women playing football for almost half a century and bring us to the present-day success of the women’s game.

Dr Fiona Skillen is a Senior Lecturer in History at Glasgow Caledonian University. Her research interests concern aspects of sports history, gender and changes in popular culture. She is particularly interested in the influence which dominant discourses concerning gender and modernity had on women’s popular culture. Her monograph, Women, Sport and Modernity focused specifically on the ways in which these discourses impinged on and were negotiated by women who wished to participate in sport within the interwar period.

Refreshments will be served at the event.
