Open Studios: From Sashiko to bookbinding

Eco Upcycler Elisabeth Viguie Culshaw and Bookbinder Cassandra Barron, invite you into their studios in Edinburgh and Glasgow, for a unique series of textile upcycling and bookbinding workshops!

Open Studios: From Sashiko to bookbinding

About Open Studios: From Sashiko to bookbinding

The workshops will each explore a different technique that can be used to transform pre-loved denim, before using your creations to make a hard or soft-bound journal.

Join us for one workshop or come along to all three for a monthly fix of creativity as the nights draw in.

In this workshop we will...
Get to grips with the art of Sashiko, a form of decorative reinforcement stitching from Japan that dates back to 1600. Sashiko translates to 'little stabs' and traditionally takes the form of eye-catching geometric shapes created with white thread on blue fabric.

In this workshop Elisabeth will help you create a Sashiko sampler onto recycled denim, using a template or design of your own choosing. Cassandra will then assist you in transforming your unique textile sampler into a Japanese Stab bound hardback book with a geometric exposed binding.

Tea, coffee and sweet treats will be provided and you are invited to bring your own lunch.

Class sizes will be kept small to allow for a decent sized work space and a relaxed workshop with the opportunity to get to know like-minded people. All materials are included but you are invited to help with our recycling effort by bringing an old pair of jeans/or denim item ready to be recycled.

This is a great opportunity to learn a range of new skills in a creative environment and produce a number of personalised books that make for unique and usable sketchbooks, journals and photo albums - a great personal project or environmental present for a loved one.

If you have access requirements, please get in touch to discuss how we can support your visit.

**Spaces on this class are limited and there will be no refunds or transfers once a booking has been made, unless your place can be filled from a waiting list, in which case the full fee will be refunded. If the workshop is cancelled for any reason, you will be offered either a cash refund or the option of being transferred to an alternative event.**

While we take every opportunity to ensure the details for Open Studios: From Sashiko to bookbinding are accurate, we always advise that you contact the event organiser before setting out for the event to avoid disapointment.
