This workshop offers paper enthusiasts and friends space to learn more about the art of folding paper in a relaxed and friendly environment as you are guided through the following stages.
Starting with basic folds and several simple models to 'warm up' and introduce the diagrams, tutor and expert paper folder Dennis Walker, will then guide participants through more intricate stages of making Origami with particular focus on the 'Butterfly', an intricate and delicate form. Dennis will teach the model from diagrams, explaining the symbols.and show that the model can be modified reasonably easily. Through demonstration you will learn how various papers will fold differently, even with following the same steps. If time allows, participants can try 'wet-folding' with either the butterfly, or some free-folding experimental techniques using soft or curved folds with a slightly damp paper to create a sculptural form.
Students will produce several introductory models, three or four different butterflies and be supplied with a list of websites, books, shops and suppliers to enable further exploration of Origami after the course. A small box will be supplied for you to take your folded paper creations away.
Dennis Walker has been folding paper for over 40 years and has been a member of the British Origami Society (BOS) for over 30 years. He has served on the BOS council for six years, including 4 years as editor of the BOS Magazine. He has created a few models, but regards himself as more of a folder and teacher. He has also attended origami conventions in the UK, USA, Holland, Italy, Germany and Japan and has taught models at all of these conventions! He is currently part of the team organising a BOS convention in Edinburgh to be held at the end of August 2020.
PULP, run by papermaker Alison Newman, is a specialised workspace dedicated to paper art and bookbinding. The workshop is easy to access and is a comfortable space to work in. Tea, coffee and a selection of sweet treats will be provided but participants are asked to bring their own packed lunch or there are shops around 8 mins walk. Local free parking is available and this space is suitable for wheelchair users. Beginners are very welcome and all materials and equipment are supplied within the course fee.
