Drawing the City: Sketching Workshop and Afternoon Tea at the Necropolis and Cathedral

About Drawing the City: Sketching Workshop and Afternoon Tea at the Necropolis and Cathedral

It is said you don’t really understand a building until you’ve drawn it. This afternoon workshop by artist, watercolourist, and cartoonist Frank Boyle will teach participants how to truly see buildings and architectural details, by capturing their essence on paper.

This is perfect for beginners and experienced drawers alike – anyone with a genuine love of Glasgow’s architecture. Both beginners and experienced sketchers will get guidance and instruction to hone their skills. The workshop will take participants on a roving walk around the Cathedral precinct and Necropolis drawing buildings and building elements, with guidance and instruction from Mr. Boyle. Participants will increase their technical skill at drawing, and also exercise their creativity – no prior experience required.

Materials (pen, pencil, paper, and board) and basic seating will be provided. Participants with further materials they’d like to use are encouraged to bring these along. Seating will be camp stools, and participants can bring along camp/portable chairs, if they have them. The workshop will begin and end in front of Glasgow Cathedral.

Frank Boyle is a Glasgow-based artist and Cartoonist of the Year in 2006, who ran a weekly strip in the Tribune, and daily cartoon “Boyling Point” in the Edinburgh Evening News until 2015. In addition to cartoons, his work includes architectural watercolours of buildings in Glasgow and elsewhere. In 2005, one of his cartoons was purchased by the National Gallery of Scotland for their permanent collection.
