About The Mackintosh Series: Seven Stories of His Artistic Journey by John Cairney

September the 7th 2019 marks the first birthday of Mackintosh at the Willow since its extensive four-year long refurbishment. In celebration of this event we have invited artist John Cairney to display his ‘Mackintosh Series’, seven stories of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s artistic journey, in the newly opened Terrace Gallery. Cairney's art will be the very first to have hung in this space and will be open to viewing by the public daily by appointment.

Contact Isabella at isabella@mackintoshatthewillow.com or by calling 0141 2041903 to book your viewing.

Cairney says: “Telling Mackintosh's story in paint has been an exhilarating challenge as he, himself, knew the ecstasy and the agony. He developed his determination and drive in his youth as draughtsman by day and artist by night. As part of The Four he knew international acclaim, yet his design for The Glasgow School of Art proved controversial. Going out on his own was a rude awakening. Despair set in. It was only in Port Vendres, painting watercolours, he found happiness again. It wasn't to last and cancer of the tongue finally defeated him.”
