Bohemiana

About Bohemiana

Following her sell-out concerts in July and September, Portuguese Fado Singer Mariana Moreira returns to the intimate, club-like setting of the upstairs room at The Drake to present an international evening that will recreate the atmosphere of a Bohemian Club where music of all types is enjoyed.

Mariana Moreira is rapidly gaining respect for her soulful singing of traditional Fado; Cape Verdean "Morna" and Brazilian "canções brasileiras". Drawing on the tradition of the great "fadistas": the late Amália Rodrigues (the 'Rainha do Fado' -"Queen of Fado") and modern fado star, Mariza, her singing strikes directly to your heart and evokes the clubs and kitchens of downtown Lisbon.

Mariana is joined by Samuele Sorana and a special guest Elyssa Vulpes.

Elyssa is singer of inventive and stylish songs from a wide range of traditions. Originally from Italy, Elyssa has lived and studied in Ireland and New Zealand. She has made a name for herself in Edinburgh, where she now now lives and has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe as well as previously at The Drake. She has recorded in her own name and as ‘Moonwhispers’, as well as playing the Edinburgh scene as a soloist, drummer and leading a local band
Red Fox.

"Elyssa Vulpes is one of Edinburgh’s brightest musical talents. Described as a mix of Jade Bird, Neko Case and Martha Wainwright with an Italian edge, her latest album – Holding On, Letting Go – is a wonderful mix of passionate songs, some of which will tug at your heart, others – like the infectious Do You Wanna Play – will instinctively get your feet tapping" - Edinburgh Reporter

Samuele Sorana trained at the Conservatorio Rossini di Pesaro, Italy. As a highly proficient jazz guitarist he has performed with local jazz musicians in Glasgow as well as accompanying Mariana's performances of Fado.
