About In Series: An Exhibition of Drawings by Fraser Taylor

Opening reception 13th September 3-5pm
Ralph Cowan Gallery
7th Floor
City of Glasgow College

The exhibition presents multiple bodies of work on paper by Fraser Taylor created between 2003-2019: selected works demonstrating the significance of the language of drawing and image making. Through his particular method of developing a series of works, Taylor shows his commitment to the subject and its content; alongside his exploration of processes and materials.

In contemporary arts culture where the emphasis has shifted towards the use of digital technology, Taylor seeks to expand the traditional creative process of observational drawing-the essential part of his practice, which is placed between figuration and abstraction.

“Through drawing I am interested in locating images and forms that are both recognisable and not. It is this back and forward and between, working out the variable quantity of each that intrigues me.” - Fraser Taylor, August 2019

Taylor draws inspiration from his environment, whether observing the northerly coastline of Shetland, industrial cranes in urban development, or cacti in botanical gardens. Taylor translates his visual perception into bold and expressive lines and shapes. The process of drawing is fast and intuitive; his effort is focused on responding to that very moment of experience. Taylor never draws anything in isolation, but creates sequences sometimes left alone for long periods of time. Scrutiny of his drawings is an essential part of his creative process. Taylor revisits his work in order to make new connections and consider qualities that will provide potential for further development-whether for animation, sculpture, painting or the printed image. It is this time and distance that enables him to view his work in different ways, and to engage in a dialogue that exists between the act of making and reflection.
