Ella Fitzgerald is widely regarded as the greatest-ever jazz singer and to celebrate her centenary in 2017 the UK’s leading jazz vocalist Tina May and her world class accompanist, pianist Brian Kellock revisited the classic 1975 meeting of Ella and piano giant Oscar Peterson.
Such was the success of their initial Ella & Oscar tour, with these two musicians who thrive on spontaneity creating fantastic energy levels in response to one another, they have continued to work together, earning rapturous audience reactions and praise from promoters for the quality, professionalism and easy approachability of their performances.
May has sung with a kaleidoscope of talents, including the great American jazz players Nat Adderley, Joe Henderson, Ray Bryant and Kenny Clarke and comedian Rory Bremner, and her most recent album, Cafe Paranoia, has been enthusiastically received as a personal tribute the great jazz singer and hipster Mark Murphy. Her international reputation continues to grow, with acclaimed performances in Shanghai and Australia, and her superb interpretations of songs sung by Edith Piaf have won approval in Paris and across Europe.
Kellock is the creative master sought out by Stanley Turrentine, Scott Hamilton, Sheila Jordan, Joe Temperley and Carol Kidd as an accompanist and his long-time duo with fellow Scot, saxophonist Tommy Smith continues to showcase their strong artistic rapport. Kellock’s own award-winning trio and his work as featured soloist with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra are further examples of his mastery and his successes at the Scottish Jazz Awards 2019, where he won the Best Instrumentalist title, and the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2019, where he was shortlisted in the same category, are testament to the continuing high regard conferred on him.
With Tina May and Brian Kellock, consummate singing, supreme musicianship and two natural onstage personalities combine in an evening of musical magic.
