The scheme, called nextbike in Glasgow, will see 170 cycles in operation available at 31 permanent locations across the city. The number of bikes will rise to 400 later in summer. Six additional temporary stations will be added for the Commonwealth games.
The scheme is operated by nextbike UK, a subsidiary of nexbike Germany which operates 18,000 bikes in 80 cities across 14 countries. Members can ride in all nextbike cities – worldwide. In the UK nextbike recently launched a scheme in Bath and will also soon be launching in Belfast and Stirling. Their goal is to introduce cycle hire into every major city in UK to become a national transport network allowing nextbike members to ride bikes wherever they go.
Bikes will be maintained and distributed by local based charity, ‘Glasgow Bike Station’ which promotes good mental and physical health through cycling as a means of transport. The bike station is run by Gregory Chauvet who has grown his enterprise from a small market stand to a thriving organisation.
The bikes will be sponsored by the ‘People Make Glasgow’ brand established by Glasgow City Council although the unique advertising opportunity will be made available commercially after the first year.
Annual membership will cost £60 and hire costs are free for the first 30 minutes and 50p for each half hour extra. Hire costs for short-term casual users are £1 for the first 30 minutes then £1 for each half hour extra. Users can register online, via nextbike App or by customer hotline.
A special launch is offer of 50% discount of the £60 annual registration fee expires on 30th June.
Local businesses can make the most of the scheme by signing up for a corporate membership to allow staff, members or customers access to the bikes for free.
This service is aimed at organisations looking to improve their green credentials, promote active transport and reduce use of cars for short frequent journeys.
Hotels, accommodation providers and major attractions can sign up to become membership retailers and earn commission from every hire made by their own guests or referrals.
