Glasgow Museums are a treasure chest of wonderful objects and artworks which can fire the imagination, start conversations and inspire creativity. A new resource has been created especially for their youngest visitors, entitled 25 Things To Do In Glasgow Museums Before You’re 5. The booklet follows a fine furry friend, by the name of Museum Mouse, around Glasgow’s nine, free to enter, museums. As he goes, he suggests fun things to see and do in each museum. Children have been set a challenge – can they visit all 9 museums, and complete the things listed, before they turn 5?
Youngsters are encouraged to go on a dragon hunt at the Burrell, visit the peephole in GoMA inspired by the inside of a whale, or dress up as characters from Sleeping Beauty at Kelvingrove Museum. Parents can help under 5s count the many different animals carved on the Doulton Fountain outside the People’s Palace, or copy the funny expressions on the heads in St Nicholas Garden outside Provand’s Lordship. Meanwhile at Riverside Museum, children can show off their firefighting skills with the interactive fire engine game.
St Mungo’s must be one of the best places in the city for a scarier version of eye spy, with its huge window overlooking the Necropolis, and Scotland Street School offers the chance to talk about times gone by with old school uniforms, classrooms and playground games. Become a mini explorer at Glasgow Museums Resource Centre with your hat, binoculars and torch, but remember visits here must be part of a pre-booked workshop or tour.
Local youngsters Cameron, Molly and Eva joined Museum Mouse at People’s Palace Museum where they completed all three challenges, before proudly collecting their stickers at the Enquiry Desk.
Chair of Glasgow Life, Councillor Archie Graham, said: “Visitors continue to flock to all nine Glasgow Museums, with over 3 million attendances recorded last year alone. A huge number of these are by families with small children. When you look at the incredible objects on display it is easy to see how with a little imagination and explanation the city’s museums can open up a whole new world to even the youngest of visitors.
“I am delighted the Under 5’s have been set their own challenge. I know that if parents can spare a little time to help them enjoy the many adventures detailed in this new booklet, they could give their child a lifelong love of exploring, investigating and enjoying arts and culture. And I think that is a truly wonderful gift to give the next generation.”
The 25 Things To Do In Glasgow Museums Before You’re 5 booklet can be picked up from any of Glasgow Museums. For more information on the museum opening times, transport options, visit www.glasgowmuseums.com
