A group of talented, aspiring stage stars are gearing up to take centre stage in City of Glasgow College’s contemporary and unique adaptation of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Students from the college’s HNC Acting and Performance course will take to the stage of Webster’s Theatre in Glasgow next week. The show follows the full plot of Shakespeare’s original story but adds a contemporary punk twist, including a soundtrack comprising Joy Division, The Clash, Blondie, and Madness.
Former Drumchapel High School pupil Sabrina Habib and Tanya Gimani will take on the roles of Hermia and Mustardseed. Twenty-three-year-old Sabrina said: “I’ve wanted to be an actress since I was a little girl but didn’t have the confidence to get onstage until fairly recently. I had tried my hand at different courses before enrolling at City of Glasgow College and never enjoyed them as acting is what I’ve always wanted to do.
“I’m really looking forward to performing in the show – the most challenging thing about rehearsals has probably been practicing the fight scene as it’s very physical.”
Nineteen-year-old Tanya added: “The first time I performed for an audience was at a school talent show when I was a 12 and I remember loving every minute. Before I decided to pursue a career as an actress, I wanted to be a therapist but my heart definitely lies with theatre.”
Khumbo Misanjo, who is a former pupil of Hillhead High School, has wanted to be an actor since he was a child but only built enough confidence to perform in front of an audience three years ago. The 21-year-old, who has been cast as Oberon, explained: “I decided to enrol at City of Glasgow College so I could learn more about acting. I’ve wanted to work in the industry since I was young but didn’t actually perform for an audience until I started the course. I’ve learnt a lot since then and can’t wait for the show to open.”
Former Eastbank High School pupil Richard Phillips, who will play both Demetrius and Flut, added: “To me, the best thing about acting is being able to bring character to life. Both the characters I’m playing are very different so that has been quite challenging but I’ve really enjoyed the experience.”
Stephen Cafferty, Acting and Performance lecturer at City of Glasgow College, praised the students for their commitment to bringing such an ambitious idea to the stage. He said: “This is a very ambitious production that is a pacey, accessible, and fun version of a Shakespeare classic set in a fantasy world. It’s the first time many of the students have performed Shakespeare, and they have done a superb job of producing all their own costumes and make-up as well as embracing their characters onstage.”
A Midsummer Night’s Dream by City of Glasgow College is on at Webster’s Theatre in Glasgow from May 19-21. Tickets and more information are available from tinyurl.com/MidsummerTix
