First in the design category was Sophie McClure of Notre Dame High School, whose submission ‘Mackintosh + Rain’ took top prize and impressed the judges with her concept. Notre Dame High School was awarded with a £200 cheque and Sophie received a £100 St. Enoch Centre gift card.
Craig Brown from Govan High School took first place in the expressive category with his outstanding art work ‘A New Era’, with the judges praising his thoughtful work. Govan High School was presented with a £200 cheque and Craig also received a £100 St. Enoch Centre gift card.
Also amongst the winners was Omar Ibrahim of Govan High School, who received a special recognition award. Omar, from Egypt, had only been living in Scotland for one month prior to entering the competition and had never completed a painting before.
The winners were announced at a prize-giving ceremony at the specially constructed Mackintosh Studios in St. Enoch Centre.
Art and design contest Mackintosh The Innovator was established by St. Enoch Centre to encourage secondary school pupils to think creatively about Mackintosh’s legacy and his focus on innovation. Over 60 students from four schools - Williamwood High School, Notre Dame High School, Hillhead High School and Govan High School - entered the contest when it launched earlier this year.
Submissions went on display in June and have been viewed by thousands of shoppers over the summer, who were able to vote for their favourite entries.
The entries were then judged by an expert panel, including Dr Robyne Calvert, Mackintosh Research Fellow at Glasgow School of Art (GSA) and Stuart Robertson, Director of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society. They were joined by art critic Jan Patience and David Cairns, a Trustee of the Willow Tea Rooms Trust and owner of Windyhill – one of only two private homes built by Mackintosh, and Anne Ledgerwood, general manager of St. Enoch Centre.
Anne Ledgerwood said: “Charles Rennie-Mackintosh is known around the world for his distinctive designs, and it’s fantastic to see so many Glasgow pupils taking inspiration from him and getting creative.
“We were thrilled to host the Mackintosh-inspired competition again this year. The quality of artwork produced by the pupils is outstanding and we hope it inspires other schools to take part next year.
“I’d like to thank all of the pupils who took part in our Mackintosh competition, and their schools for supporting them. I also wish to pay to tribute to our fantastic judging panel for their important contribution.”
Second place in the design category was scooped by Euan Fraser of Hillhead High School, with Amy Anna Graham from Williamwood High School taking third place. Williamwood High School also won a special recognition award.
Second prize in the expressive category was won by Megan Lewis of Govan High, with third place taken by Grace Maslen of Hillhead High School.
Each of the second placed winners received £150 for their schools while pupils in third place earned £100 for their schools.
St. Enoch Centre’s Mackintosh The Innovator exhibition will remain open throughout October as part of the Mackintosh Festival.
