Councillor David McDonald, Chair of Glasgow Life, said: “It is easy to get caught up with an ever-expanding To-Do list at this time of year. Glasgow Museums has launched a programme of Christmas workshops, activities and events designed to add a little fun to this festive season and keep the last-minute frenzy to a minimum. The great news is most are free and there is no need to book.”
The ever-popular Santa School is set to return to Scotland Street School Museum on Saturdays and Sundays throughout December. Youngsters are invited to swap spelling and sums for lessons in learning how to be Santa, just in case they ever have to stand-in for the big man in an emergency! Although Santa will be flat out in his North Pole workshop, his trusty helpers will deliver a crash course in becoming a ‘Stand-in Santa’, with children learning how to create their own Santa beard, shake their belly like a bowl full of jelly and make some reindeer food. Santa School workshops are on Sat 2, 9 and 16 and Sun 3, 10, 17 Dec, each session lasts for one hour and MUST be pre-booked at www.glasgowmuseums.com
Enjoy all the fun of the Christmas Fair when Riverside Museum sprinkles some festive fairy dust over its iconic Edwardian street transforming it into a real bustling Christmas market. Crafts stalls will be brimming with unique, handcrafted and locally produced gifts, jewellery, decorations and food. Children can go arts and crafts crazy at the creative Wooden Trains, Toy Figures and Banners workshop, while outside they can whizz round on FREE fairground rides. Riverside Christmas Festival is on Sat 2 and Sun 3 Dec. There will be a quiet hour on Sun 3 Dec from 10 – 11am for families of children with autism, who can enjoy the fair in a quieter environment.
Nothing feels more like Christmas than listening to the angelic voices of school choirs singing traditional Christmas carols. Throughout the month of December there will be musical performances by different children’s choirs, filling Riverside with seasonal songs to lift the spirits. While on Fri 15 Dec from 1.30pm to 2.30pm pupils will tie some tinsel to their tubas, trumpets and trombones and perform festive favourites as the countdown to Christmas really hots up.
The Gallery of Modern Art’s Saturday Art Club is sure to have Judy Garland singing Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas in its ears as they help imaginative elves make their own Christmas garland. The little red breast bright against the white winter snow makes everyone go aww… Search for the tiny bird best associated with Christmas at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, learn a little about them and create your very own Robin Bobbin decoration. And whether it’s Away in a Manager, Bing Crosby’s White Christmas or Wham’s Last Christmas everyone has a yule-tide favourite. Did last year’s stocking give way under the weight of all the wonderful presents Santa left for you? Need a new one to hang on the mantelpiece this Christmas Eve? Pull on your Christmas pullover and head to the People’s Palace for a festive, fun-filled workshop making baubles for the tree and stockings for the fireplace. While for many the angel Gabrielle’s visit is the start of the true story of Christmas and is why some people adorn the top of their tree with an angel or star. At St Mungo Museum get crafty discovering how to create some beautiful and unusual angels using tin making techniques and recycled materials. And finally, a partridge in a pear tree. Celebrate the Twelve Days of Christmas at Glasgow Museum Resource Centre, who is offering a family tour of the city’s amazing collection with a seasonal twist.
