The events are inspired by Tramway’s spring and summer programme of contemporary visual and performance arts. The activities are created and presented by Tramway’s Take Part Team working directly with leading international and Glasgow based artists. Many of the activities are free.
TRYOUT events are our drop in creative sessions in painting, drawing, collage, sculpture and sound for all ages. These include a session on Sunday 26 August exploring messy ways to make art! We are also holding a special Family Weekend on 28 and 29 April with activities to help young audiences find out more about the exhibitions Tramway is showing as part of Scotland’s largest festival of visual arts, Glasgow International.
Time for Art provides a space for people aged 55 and over to share their interest in art as part of a group, realising individual and collective art projects.
Tramweans are popular weekly activity sessions on Mondays in June for pre-schoolers and their grown-ups with movement, storytelling, and play.
Acclaimed Glasgow-based artist Rosanna Irvine leads a workshop on 19 June on learning and experimenting with the drawing style used in her new work, Breath Pieces, which premieres at Tramway in June.
You can explore improvised movement in a dance workshop with one of the city’s leading dance organisations, Glasgow Jam, on 6 August. The workshop is inspired not only by the beautiful artwork on display, but also by the huge space of our main gallery – one of the largest in Europe.
The Net Effect is a group for 16 to 25 year-old emerging artists working in projection, sound, storytelling, printmaking and sculpture. Their latest work, Celebrate ART is a new large scale installation and performance event, taking place as part of the Year of Young People 2018. The free-to-attend performance and exhibition launch are on 7 July, with the exhibition running until 26 August.
There also talks from leading international artist Florentina Holzinger and Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Glasgow, Roderick Brown; a brand new Philosophy Club for 9 to 12 year-olds; Storytelling in the Gallery; bookable workshops for schools and community groups, and much much more.
Councillor David McDonald, Chair of Glasgow Life and Deputy Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “Take Part is at the heart of Tramway’s fantastic programme of contemporary arts. The activities are the ideal way to discover more about the exhibitions and shows.
“You can learn about the techniques leading international artists use to create their work, and about the stories and ideas that inspired them – from the artists themselves and Tramway’s expert team. You can also develop your own creativity, whatever your age or experience. Everyone is welcome at Tramway.
“Take Part is an ideal starting point if you’ve not been to Tramway before and, if you are one of our regular visitors, a great way to enhance your enjoyment of the work presented year round in one of Glasgow and Scotland’s leading international art spaces.”
Tramway is supported by Glasgow City Council and Creative Scotland.
