The Scottish Boat Race, also known as the Edinburgh vs. Glasgow Boat Race, is believed to be the third oldest varsity boat race in the world. Predated only by the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race and the Yale-Harvard Regatta, it sees crews from the University of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh compete on the River Clyde.
The 2019 Scottish Boat Race will take place on Saturday 25 May on the Clyde. The official viewing area will be at the Glasgow Science Centre. The event will consist of eight different races, a mixed graduate race, both men’s and women’s novices (beginners), men’s and women’s second eight, men’s and women’s first eight and a 2km ergometer team challenge consisting of two male (one novice, one senior) and two female (also one novice, one senior) athletes.
THE COURSE
The 2019 races will take place over a 2km stretch of the Clyde, starting at the South Portland Street Suspension Bridge and finish opposite the Glasgow Science Centre Tower. The graduate race will take place over a shorter distance but will also finish at the Glasgow Science Centre Tower.
WHERE TO WATCH
Our recommended viewing area for the 2019 races is at the finishing stretch at the Glasgow Science Centre. This is also where the crews will prepare for the race and where the boats will set off from. Refreshments will be available to purchase at this area. Boat Race spectators will also be to take advantage of a 50% saving for entry to the Glasgow Science Centre on the day when showing a valid Boat Race wristband. These wristbands will be available from the “Clyde Suite” on the day of the race.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
