Outskirts Festival - POSTPONED

About Outskirts Festival - POSTPONED

Our annual Outskirts festival returns to Platform, Easterhouse, Glasgow for 2020 with a thrilling line-up of performance, music and visual art. Taking place across the theatre, studio spaces, and public areas of our building, the festival’s programme runs from afternoon into the evening, and is a fantastic event in which indulge in a wide range of cross art form experimentation.

The line-up this year includes music from Richard Youngs & Bell Lungs (performing Easterhouse Conversations) and LUKI; live performance including Craig Manson’s GAYBOYS and Karl Jay Lewin and Matteo Fargion’s Extremely Pedestrian Chorales, Morven Mulgrew presents Broken-Hearted-Soap-Dish and there is brand new work from visual artists Walker & Bromwich. Plus much more!

Outskirts Festival Line Up:

Easterhouse Conversations: Richard Youngs and Bell Lungs
Now in its 6th year, Easterhouse Conversations returns for another outing. Glasgow based musician Richard Youngs, renowned for his prolific and diverse output, and many collaborations, teams up with Bell Lungs, a Scottish experimental musician to create this brand new, unique composition – which will be performed only at Outskirts. Easterhouse Conversations seeks to document stories and moments in the lives of the residents of Easterhouse and the duo has been meeting regularly over the last few months with people who use Platform and local community groups.

Youngs said: “Easterhouse Conversations is a journey into the unknown: a new approach to music-making with a new collaborator. I don’t know what to expect, which is very exciting. Every trip to Easterhouse sees us meeting new people with new stories to tell and experiences to share. There is no predicting where our conversations will go. Not knowing the outcome means the project is highly experimental. This is just the kind of uncertainty that can lead to fun and interesting music.”

Ceylan Hay of Bell Lungs said: “Working with Richard Youngs and the people of Easterhouse is a real treat for me! I love meeting new people and hearing their thoughts and stories, and it’s an exciting challenge to collaborate with Richard, who I’ve never played with before. Already we have heard some fascinating tales about people’s adventures of forbidden romance, going for walks, jumping into swimming pools and drawing trees! It couldn’t be more varied, as we’re talking to the young and the older in the Easterhouse community, and it’s such an honour to turn people’s lives into music. At the end of the concert, I hope they find themselves singing our songs as they walk out the door…”

Walker & Bromwich | Recalled to Life
The opening event for Walker & Bromwich’s new exhibition Recalled to Life forms part of the visual arts line up. At 240-feet long, the Easterhouse Mosaic was one of the largest handmade murals in Europe, well-loved locally and one of the most significant works of post war public art commissioning. Unveiled in 1983 and widely celebrated, it nonetheless fell into disrepair and was de-commissioned in 2004. Platform has commissioned collaborative artist duo Zoe Walker and Neil Bromwich to uncover the radical working-class history of this lost community artwork.

Through exhibition and a series of performative walks, Walker & Bromwich is bringing physical fragments of the mosaic back to life through re-enactments and eyewitness stories. From Platform to the ruins of the wall at Lochend Road, the artists and residents are restaging the mosaic’s five-act narrative of work, housing, education, socialism and ecology. Supported by Platform, Glasgow International and Seven Lochs Wetland Park.

The exhibition is part of Glasgow International 2020.

Gayboys
Hey henny!

Are you ready for a show?!

Yaaasss qween!

Gayboys presented and performed by Craig Manson, alongside performer Conner Milliken, forms part of Outskirts performance programme. Gay men are the poster boys of the Lgbtqia+ community, and these two gay boys are no exception. The tank topped bum boys will be performing for the audience’s pleasure, exploring how gay men are placed on a money-making pedestal. From the rainbow sandwiches in the supermarket, to the shiny pride flags outside your local bank, we’ve never had it so good, gurl! Right?!

Combining choreography by Craig Manson & Conner Milliken, and design from award winning Scenographers MHz, Gayboys is an explosive new performance supported by Creative Scotland, in partnership with Tramway and Platform.

Extremely Pedestrian Chorales
Extremely Pedestrian Chorales is a collaborative performance project by Karl Jay Lewin and Matteo Fargion presenting the commonplace experience of the pedestrian as an act of beauty, meaning and gentle comedy.

Within the 36 short dances, simple movements are rhythmically and spatially structured by translations of JS Bach’s famous Chorales – a series of simple choral harmonies originally written to make the singing of hymns accessible to the masses. Within the strict structure of the scores, personality and subtle relationships between the dancers can shine through.

The performers casually introduce their scores to audiences as they arrive for the show. Presented by Agile Arts.

‘...clever, funny, and thought-provoking’ ★★★★★ The Herald
‘ ... a Dadaist riposte to Strictly Come Dancing…’ The Guardian

Luki
Glasgow based singer, pianist and synth player Luki will be performing new songs at Outskirts, which have been developed in collaboration with producer Micha Rivers for a set of forthcoming EPs. In contrast with the spare arrangements of voice and piano on Wisps, in these new songs her striking soprano voice and piano combine with an ensemble of live and sampled electronics and percussion.

Luki will also be performing tracks from her new release The Parts/ The Empty Arms - a double A-side single on micro lathe cut label Sonido Polifonico.

“Luki’s music sounds like it should be in a mysterious, enrapturing film – it’s narrative driven, evocative, and with delicate touches of the surreal” (Pink Wafer).

“Her ‘witchy soprano, elegant piano and synth create a sense of time and place out of joint, as if Delia Derbyshire and Brian Eno set up shop in an Edwardian parlour” (Stewart Smith, The List)

Morven Mulgrew: Broken-Hearted-Soapp-Dish
Performed with Jamie Bolland, Rick Holmes & Gerry Mulgrew

“My mother died and my daughter was born”.

Broken-Hearted-Soap-Dish is a nonsensical autobiographical musical absurdical installation exploring grief, post-natal depression, domestic rage and the existential crisis with some fun (future) hits such as I’M AN ANT (IN A CAR), Baby Shark (German Edit) and The Violence of a Wife, all with musical accompaniment by the NO-TIME band comprising of Jamie Bolland on Organ, Rick Holmes on guitar and Gerry Mulgrew on the potter’s treadle wheel.

As part of this installation there will be an open access pottery workshop (everyone welcome) followed by a performance by the NO TIME band. Times for these events to be confirmed.

Please check the Platform website - www.platform-online.co.uk nearer the time of the event for details of performance times.
