Working with a variety of materials to explore cost effective and eco friendly solutions to repair, repurpose and reuse. Materials and equipment provided. With funding from Partick and Thornwood Ideas Fund.
Session 1: will be an introductory session, focusing on hand and machine sewing basics. A chance to explore ideas around upcycling, reuse and repair in a relaxed environment.
Session 2: Make a tote bag using donated fabrics. A no sew and a simple machine sewn bag. Materials supplied. If you have some fabric you wish to use from home please bring along. Old curtains, duvet covers and sheets are ideal.
Session 3: Working with bicycle inner tubes, cutting and piercing to create your own jewellery. Experimenters welcome to explore sewing with inner tubes.
Session 4: Cushion covers. Using basic machine sewing skills create a cushion cover, made using donated household fabrics. Materials provided but feel free to bring something from home you’d like to work with. Old curtains and duvet covers are ideal.
Session 5: Ring Pull Jewellery. Create beautiful Jewellery pieces and learn a variety of assembling techniques that produce different surface texture that can also be used for ring pull bag construction. Materials provided but you can never have too many ring pulls, so get collecting.
Session 6: Make an apron using donated fabrics. Create a simple apron and improve on machine sewing skills. Materials provided. Feel free to bring unused fabric from home that you’d like to give a new life.
Session 7: This session will be determined by participants input in sessions 1-6.
Session 8: Sewing repairs. Repair is the most economical and environmental solution and worth attempting to save a loved item. Looking at both discreet and visible mending. Bring from home a repair you’d like help or advice with, or work with some scraps to experiment with different techniques.
Session 9: This session will be determined by participants input in sessions 1-6.
Session 10: Create T.shirt yarn for sewing and knitting. Learn to crochet or knit with your yarn to create simple shapes. Materials provided but feel free to bring along something of your own that you’d like to work with. T.shirts with no side seam are required for this.
Session 11: Zero waste sewing patterns. Exploring patterns and techniques for reducing waste when dressmaking. Make a simple zero waste garment. Simple sewing machine skills.
Session 12: This session will be determined by participants input in sessions 1-6.
