Dominic Hill, Artistic Director of the Citizens Theatre, returns to Scottish Opera to bring his Shakespearean expertise to bear once more.
Joined by designer Tom Piper, famed for the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red installation at the Tower of London, he promises to enchant and entertain with Britten’s beguiling work. Four lovers lost in the woods, fairies, magic, comedy and more – all come together in an otherworldly blend of imagination and reality.
The music is some of Britten’s most atmospheric. With a staggering range of instrumental colours that brings to life fairies, lovers and rustics – as well as the wood itself – it is intense, heady, and packed with standout vocal writing. The cast of talent-to-watch includes David Shipley, recent graduate of the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme, and countertenor Morten Grove Frandsen, a winner of Denmark’s Reumert Talent prize, alongside soprano Jennifer France (Anthropocene 2019) and Scottish tenor and BBC broadcaster Jamie MacDougall (Ariadne auf Naxos 2018). Music Director Stuart Stratford conducts.
Sung in English with English supertitles
Running time approx. 3 hrs 15 mins
