Glasgow Zine Library’s strand of punk documentaries ‘EAT THE RICH!’ is not only an homage to those who paved the way in DIY culture, but also functions as a crash course for those who want to learn more about the rich history of this culture!
This month we’ll be screening Afro-punk (2003)! This 66 minute documentary explores race identity within the punk scene. More than your everyday "Behind the Music" or typical "Black History month" documentary, this film tackles hard questions, covering issues such as exile, loneliness, interracial dating and black power. We follow the lives of four people who have dedicated themselves to the punk rock lifestyles. They find themselves in conflicting situations, living the dual life of a person of color in a mostly white community.
Runtime: 66 minutes
PLEASE NOTE: unfortunately this film will not be captioned or subtitled
DIY is heavily linked with and influenced by film, with a long history of non-mainstream, counter-cultural and independent filmmaking emerging out of DIY culture, such as grassroots political film and documentaries tied to music and cultural activism. Make sure to stay behind after the screening to explore our collection of film and music related zines.
This film strand is supported by Film Hub Scotland, part of the BFI’s Film Audience Network, and funded by Screen Scotland and Lottery funding from the BFI.
ACCESS: The Library can accommodate wheelchair users, but unfortunately, we do not have a wheelchair accessible bathroom yet - we are currently applying for funding to make our bathroom accessible to everyone, and we will be making the needed adjustments as soon as we have the funds to do so. If you have any questions or requests about access, please contact email@example.com
