In this workshop we’ll be talking about the history of punk and all the different things it means (style, music, DIY, politics, beliefs). Participants will then make their own zines about what punk means today/actionable ways to be punk.
This workshop compliments Glasgow Zine Library’s strand of punk documentaries ‘EAT THE RICH!’ - which is not only an homage to those who paved the way in DIY culture, but also functions as a crash course for those who want to learn more about the rich history of this culture!
This is a free event, but booking is required.
// What else is part of this strand? //
DIY is heavily linked with and influenced by film, with a long history of non-mainstream, counter-cultural and independent filmmaking emerging out of DIY culture, such as grassroots political film and documentaries tied to music and cultural activism. This month we’ll be screening AFROPUNK (2003)! This 66 minute documentary explores race identity within the punk scene.
Tickets for that event are available here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/eat-the-rich-afropunk-the-documentary-2003-tickets-91318376723
EAT THE RICH! is supported by Film Hub Scotland, part of the BFI’s Film Audience Network, and funded by Screen Scotland and Lottery funding from the BFI.
Glasgow Zine Library (https://glasgowzinelibrary.com/) is an archive and library based in the Southside of Glasgow. It acts as a growing archive of self-published works, with an inviting and accessible area of reading in the space, as well as running a year-long programme of events to celebrate the ethos of Do It Yourself (DIY) culture.
ACCESS: The Library can accommodate wheelchair users, but unfortunately, we do not have a wheelchair accessible bathroom yet - we are currently applying for funding to make our bathroom accessible to everyone, and we will be making the needed adjustments as soon as we have the funds to do so. If you have any questions or requests about access, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
