Glasgow Zine Library’s strand of punk documentaries ‘EAT THE RICH!’ is not only an homage to those who paved the way in DIY culture, but also functions as a crash course for those who want to learn more about the rich history of this culture!
This week, we are joined by Nyla Ahmad (Joyce Delaney, Kate Mosque) for a talk on her experience of being a Muslim in the punk scene. From playing in bands as a teenager to putting on gigs at a comic book shop, Nyla has been grounded in DIY and punk culture from a young age, but has always struggled reconciling Islam with punk. Her search for belonging has taken her from gig promotion and ukulele anti-folk to finding Taqwacore and touring with UK based Muslim fronted band The Tuts. In this talk Nyla will discuss her own experiences and give a low down on the Muslims who are making waves in punk today.
DIY is heavily linked with and influenced by film, with a long history of non-mainstream, counter-cultural and independent filmmaking emerging out of DIY culture, such as grassroots political film and documentaries tied to music and cultural activism. Make sure to stay behind after the screening to explore our collection of film and music related zines.
Tickets are sold on a pay what you can basis.
We offer many free events throughout the year, but we rely on donations to continue to run our programme. Please consider giving an optional donation (suggested £3 per ticket) to support this and future events at GZL.
Glasgow Zine Library is an archive and library based in the Southside of Glasgow. It acts as a growing archive of self-published works, with an inviting and accessible area of reading in the space, as well as running a year-long programme of events to celebrate the ethos of Do It Yourself (DIY) culture.
This film strand is supported by Film Hub Scotland, part of the BFI’s Film Audience Network, and funded by Screen Scotland and Lottery funding from the BFI.
ACCESS: The Library can accommodate wheelchair users, but unfortunately, we do not have a wheelchair accessible bathroom yet - we are currently applying for funding to make our bathroom accessible to everyone, and we will be making the needed adjustments as soon as we have the funds to do so. If you have any questions or requests about access, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
