CHEEKY BESOM PRODUCTIONS: ‘Artists With Attitude’ Presents Glasgow Literary Lounge, A Monthly (4th Tuesday) East End Showcase of Literary Arts & Culture.
Are We Dancing? Salsa with Roisin MacFarlane
Yes we’re asking. Calling out around the world. Are you ready for a brand new beat? Spring is here and the time is right. Let’s Salsa in the street. Put on your dancing shoes and join Cheeky Besom Productions for a live Red Hot Salsa Dance Workshop with Latin dance instructor, Roisin MacFarlane. Salsa is a popular form of social dance originating in Cuba with different regions in Latin America having their own distinct styles. Like many cultures around the world, dance was essential in communal ritual life. These dances were performed during rituals and festivals as a symbolic representation of cultural beliefs. Salsa generally uses music ranging from about 150 bpm (beats per minute) to around 250 bpm. The basic Salsa dance rhythm consists of taking three steps for every four beats of music. The odd number of steps creates the syncopation inherent to Salsa dancing and ensures that it takes 8 beats to loop back to a new sequence of steps. MacFarlane will walk us all through a few of those steps.
ROISIN MACFARLANE: is a Hull born Salsa dancer and teacher. Roisin first learned salsa in Cardiff in 2002 when she decided to embark on a health kick in an attempt to shed some pounds. At the time she was training to become a professional violinist at the Royal Welsh Conservatoire of Music. Roisin has always been interested in dancing and started ballet and tap at the age of two. However her dreams of becoming a prima ballerina for the Danish Royal Ballet never came to fruition (neither did her professional violin career). Roisin found salsa to be much more laid back and found immense enjoyment and continued to pursue her love of Salsa when she moved up to Glasgow to complete a physiotherapy degree. In doing so, she reversed family history, herring girls on her maternal grandmother’s side had all moved down south. In 2011, Roisin was invited to share her passion for salsa as a volunteer teacher for the international charity Salsa4Water which raises money through provision of dance classes to support WaterAid projects bringing clean water and sanitation to the poorest communities around the world.
