As many western countries come alight with the glow of countless jack-o’-lanterns that signify the arrival of Halloween, we're turning east to China for inspiration.

Did you know that many traditional Chinese cultural festivals involve sacrificial offerings in the form of money, food and wine to ancestors? The most famous of these is Hungry Ghost Festival, where the deceased are believed to visit the living. According to legends, the gate that separates the world of the dead from the world of the living opens, and ghosts are free to roam the earth searching for food and entertainment.

We're looking forward to sharing some spooky tales, myths and legends, as well as introducing you to some important festivals and cultural customs.

During this uncertain time, we're bringing the folklore to you at home, via Zoom. You'll hear scary stories, take part in creepy activities, and compete in our Hallowe'en costume contest!

Look out for Judith Bowers, from our event partner Britannia Panopticon, who will tell you a spooky ghost story about the world's oldest surviving music hall.

Set the atmosphere by joining us with the lights off or lit by candlelight. We'd also love to see your scariest costumes - there will be prizes for the best dressed!

This event is for adults 16+, and parental guidance is advised (some content may not be suitable for children).
