Hello Friend We Missed You by Richard Owain Roberts
WINNER OF THE GUARDIAN’S NOT THE BOOKER PRIZE 2020
HELLO FRIEND WE MISSED YOU is a poignant and comic novel about loneliness, Netflix, existing, rural life, money, Jack Black, and learning to live in the least excruciating way possible. Its story, which unfolds on the small Welsh island of Môn, of people armed with every social media completely failing to communicate, is far, far funnier than it has any right to be. It's also, ultimately, extremely moving.
Join The Dark Philosophers to discuss this debut novel from a truly unique prose stylist. Try to read the book in advance if possible, but if you can’t don’t worry - we’ll read passages aloud during the session.
All welcome, especially those new to writing from Wales. Feel free to contact group convenor Casi Dylan with any questions: casidylan@gmail.com
The Dark Philosophers is an open reading group which brings the literature of Wales out of the shadows. Encompassing writing in Welsh and English, contemporary and ancient, rural and urban, we are building a reading list as expansive and complex as this small nation itself.
Richard Owain Roberts is a graduate of the University of Manchester and LJMU’s Writing MA. His debut short fiction collection, All The Places We Lived, was published by Parthian Books in 2015 and he is the subject of the forthcoming film ULTRA, a documentary covering the promotional tour for the collection’s Serbian translation. Born and raised on Ynys Môn, Richard lives in Cardiff with his wife, daughters, and cat, Abi The God. HELLO FRIEND WE MISSED YOU is his debut novel.
