RoSPA and insurer RSA Group have teamed up to promote the importance of remaining safe and active in later life. As part of the project, five free-to-attend virtual roadshows will be hosted for people in later life, their families and falls prevention practitioners.
The online events will take place each day from Monday, November 30 – Friday, December 4 and will be aimed at those living in Birmingham, Chelmsford, Glasgow, Manchester and Sunderland. (Please note that the locations are only relevant as a small proportion of the event content will include signposting other sources of support available locally. Those living elsewhere are also be welcome to attend). Sessions will be held at 10am and 2pm each day. When booking, you’ll have the option to select which roadshow you wish to attend.
The virtual roadshows will be accessible from any internet-enabled device, including laptops, tablets and mobile phones. They will include a live demonstration of strength and balance exercises, as well as an opportunity to ask any questions. To get the most out of the sessions you’ll be encouraged to join in with the exercises. Flat shoes and a chair are advised, but you don’t need any sportswear or special equipment. The online events are free to attend, but places are limited.
Falls are responsible for four out of five accident-related hospital admissions among people who are aged over 65, but the good news is that they can be prevented. People in later life and their families have told us they want better support to prevent falls.
Maintaining an active lifestyle and especially keeping good levels of strength and balance can help to prevent falls. Simple changes to the home environment can also reduce your risk of falling.
The virtual roadshows will focus on the role of strength and balance exercises. Bex Townley from Later Life Training will lead a demonstration and both Bex and Professor Dawn Skelton, from Glasgow Caledonian University, will be on hand to answer questions. Whether you’re in later life yourself, are a family member or work with people in later life, the roadshows will have something for you!
