Securely ranked among Scotland’s most skilled and imaginative contemporary folk acts, Breabach unite deep roots in Highland and Island tradition with the innovative musical ferment of their Glasgow base. Their 15 year adventure has included live performances from Sydney Opera House to Central Park NY. They have racked up an impressive array of accolades including five Scots Trad Music Awards, nominations as ‘Best Group’ in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and ‘European Album of the Year’ in The Songlines Music Awards. An exciting new chapter begins in 2020 with the introduction of the supremely talented, multi instrumentalist Conal McDonagh to the band and work beginning on ‘Dùsgadh’ a newly commissioned film with original score in collaboration with animator Cat Bruce.
Bringing together two of the UK's foremost folk and jazz artists and one of Scotland’s favourite writers, ‘365’ is a sparse and emotive exploration of contemporary folk music formed by multi-award winning Scottish fiddler – composer Aidan O’Rourke and Mercury Music Prize nominated, BBC Jazz Award Winner harmonium and piano player, Kit Downes. Aidan has been writing an original tune every day for the past year or so in response to James Robertson's collection of daily short stories ‘365’. Kit Downes adds bold harmonisations to Aidan's trademark lyrical and dynamic fiddle style. These special concerts offer a chance to witness two of the world’s finest musicians collaborating and exploring new music together with Esther Swift & Iona Zajac, coupled with spellbinding stories from James Robertson.
Singer and harpist Rachel Newton draws on poems and ballads that are hundreds of years old, working them into her contemporary compositional style to create a rich sound that is ambitious, original and unique. In addition to her solo work, Rachel is a skilled collaborator and founder member of The Shee, The Furrow Collective and The Lost Words: Spell Songs. She has worked across various platforms including theatre and storytelling, previously winning a Critics Award for Theatre in Scotland (CATS). November 2020 marked the release of an ambitious new solo album To The Awe, based particularly around women’s experience.
Bassekou Kouyate is one of the true masters of the ngoni, an ancient traditional lute found throughout West Africa. He is known primarily as an innovator, splicing his native griot traditions with rock, blues, funk and pop. His latest release Miri, in contrast, sees Kouyate taking a more acoustic, roots-based approach, evoking a journey back to his home village of Garana.
The last 8 months have been a whirlwind for Birmingham-based folk artist Katherine Priddy, who, having recently emerged onto the scene with her long-awaited debut EP 'Wolf', has been turning heads and steadily gaining attention. ‘Wolf’ has been championed by the BBC 2 Folk Show, BBC 6 Music’s Gideon Coe and Tom Robinson and BBC Wales, as well as receiving exceptional reviews. The great Richard Thompson named it as his 'Best Thing I've Heard All Year' in MOJO Magazine whilst Folk Radio UK pronounced the release to be "something extraordinary indeed...one of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard.
