We’re marking the new year – a belated Blwyddyn Newydd Dda to you all! – by celebrating the work of the late, great Jan Morris; author, travel writer, historian, and daughter of Eifionydd. Join us this January to discuss 'Conundrum' – a personal account, first published in 1974, of her ten-year transition from man to woman – as well as short extracts from her unique body of work.
Try to read 'Conundrum' in advance if possible, but if you can’t don’t worry – we’ll read passages aloud during the session.
All welcome, especially those new to writing from Wales. Feel free to contact group convenor Casi Dylan with any questions: casidylan@gmail.com
The Dark Philosophers is an open reading group which brings the literature of Wales out of the shadows. Encompassing writing in Welsh and English, contemporary and ancient, rural and urban, we are building a reading list as expansive and complex as this small nation itself.
Jan Morris (1926 – 2020) was a Welsh historian, author and travel writer. She is primarily known for reporting the first ascent of Everest in 1953, for the Pax Britannica trilogy on the history of the British Empire, and for portraits of cities including Oxford, Venice, Trieste, Hong Kong, and New York City. As noted by Veronica Horwell in her obituary in The Guardian, Morris was “emotionally in thrall to Welshness” and wrote of it, notably in The Matter of Wales (1984); she had steadied from “a wandering swank”, she said, into a matron who came home to a sure core of warmth.
While we take every opportunity to ensure the details for The Dark Philosophers Book Group: Conundrum by Jan Morris are accurate, we always advise that you contact the event organiser before setting out for the event to avoid disapointment. All information (whether in text or photographs) is given in good faith but should not be relied upon as being a statement of representation or fact.
