By using abstract approaches to drawing, mark making and collage, you will create a collection of work which can be used as a basis for your lampshade design. You will be introduced to the screen printing process, and experiment with different inks and processes before working on a final design. After producing a finished print you will be guided through the construction process, and leave the course with a beautiful, bespoke lampshade for display in your home.
This course is open to all abilities - no prior screen printing knowledge or drawing skill is required.
What will happen during the course?
Day 1
You will help set up a ‘still life’ which will be a starting point for various drawing, collage & mark-making exercises. You will produce a collection of designs to analyse and critique, before developing into final compositions.
You will be introduced to the craft of screen printing, and experiment with different sampling techniques, binders, and stencil making. You will be assisted in developing a personal plan for printing your chosen design in the following session.
Day 2
It’s time to get printing your lampshade, using the different approaches that you were introduced to in the previous session. You will be encouraged to work independently, whilst your tutor remains on hand for any technical support. After ironing your finished design, you will be guided through the complete construction process until you have your finished lampshade.
Both sessions will run from 11am - 1:30pm
Equipment Provided:
All the equipment for the course will be provided, including the lampshade kit, screen, squeegee, inks, and drawing materials. You are welcome to bring extra drawing materials if you have them.
Please note that this course is taking place at the Print Clan Studio on 241 High Street, dependent on the successful easing of lockdown restrictions. We will be limiting it to 5 students.
Your tutor: Orla Stevens is a practicing Scottish artist specialising in hand-crafted interior textiles and painting. Since graduating from the BA (Hons) Printed Textiles degree at Edinburgh College of Art she has sold and exhibited her work nationally, as well as working as an educator and workshop facilitator across Scotland.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
