About Woodland Wildlife Workshops

New this year! Join us to find out more about what lives in your woodland, from edible plants to busy bees, species that invade to bats that soar at night - there is no previous knowledge required and we will supply any materials needed. This is useful for absolutely anyone and if you want you can use these workshops to work towards certificates such as the John Muir Award.

*BOOKING REQUIRED, please note G45 postcode will be given priority*

ALL events/activities may be changed to be online, postponed or cancelled - before attending anything in this calendar, please check our Facebook Page for the most up-to-date information or contact us directly to avoid any potential disappointment.

Session 1: Basic Botanical ID Tools - April
You will leave this session with the tools for basic plant identification including how to recognise characteristics like size, leaf shape, colour and how to use a key to match these characteristics to the plants in your woodland. We will either explore the woodland together as we go or you’ll receive everything you need for the session if online.

Session 2: Bees and Pollinators - 10th June 4pm - 6pm
Getting a buzz out of flying insects? Or rather a fright? Can Bumblebees sting? What is the difference between a bee and a wasp? What is that Butterfly called? These and many more questions will be answered in this training session. If possible, we will go out hunting for insects with nets and magnifying glasses! If online, we’ll have photos & videos to show you along with sending you out your own ID sheet.

Session 3: Wildflowers plus Invasive Species - 8th July 4pm - 6pm
Have you noticed the new Community Wildflower Meadow at the back of Barlia Football Pitch planted by a whole range of community members? Come and explore this unique space, see what plants are there and learn how important meadows like this are for our local environment and for tackling climate change. We will also have a look at Invasive Species along the way and consider the question - what makes a plant invasive and not just new or strong? This exploration will either be in small groups or a virtual walk and presentation!

Session 4: Foraging - 12th August 4pm - 6pm
Did you know that your woodland is home to tasty wild foods that are just waiting for you to whip up and whizz into something delicious? Join us for a walk (either in person or online) in the woodlands to find some naturally grown, delicious foods and either make a small dish together or receive information on how to do it in your own time.

Session 5: All About Bats - 10th September 7pm - 9pm
During this session we will take a walk (either together or experience a virtual walk) through Castlemilk Park while learning about bat species, their habitats, how important they are to the environment and how to detect them using echolocation.
