A graduate of Glasgow School of Art in 1950, he started his career as a designer with the famous Templeton Carpet Company, followed by 8 years with the prestigious weavers Dovecot Studios. For over 80 years he delighted viewers and collectors with his inherent passion for painting, demonstrating his endearing personal response to the dramatic panoramas and moods of the Scottish mountains, glens and lochs that he loved. He successfully captured the atmosphere, the essence of mystery and loneliness in wild headlands, mountains and moorlands in all weathers. He created powerful rugged scenes of Glencoe, Arran, Skye, Iona, Ardnamurchan and other West of Scotland places. His distinctive skills were deeply rooted in his understanding of many of the important 20th century artists he admired, and he was undeniably one of the most impressive and authentic painters of Scottish scenes.
His work was admired and collected by many both in Scotland and abroad, and is held in numerous public collections including Scottish Arts Council; The Hunterian Museum & Art Gallery, Glasgow and the House of Lords, London.
This exhibition celebrates his life of art, and includes a selection of paintings and drawings which demonstrate his superb expertise and draughtsmanship.
