The Kilmaurs village opening demonstrates how to create different styles of gardens. Near the railway station there are three gardens attached to modern properties showing off how you can create modern and traditional designs. The fourth garden is near the Kilmaurs Parish Church.

10 Shaw Road (NEW) 10 Shaw Road, Kilmaurs, East Ayrshire KA3 2UD (Karen & John Woods): A contemporary rear garden planted in 2018, which is south-facing with an open aspect to adjoining fields. A water rill with underwater lighting spans the garden creating some changes in level, including a raised seating area under a pergola. A sundial provides a sculptural element.
Planting is informal, with bamboo on both sides. Early interest comes from bergenia, primulas and euphorbias, followed by bulbs and perennials, including iris, grasses, persicaria, ferns, astilbe and rodgersia.
Raised sleeper beds sit in a small area set aside for herbs and vegetables.

17 Shaw Road (NEW) 17 Shaw Road, Kilmaurs KA3 2UD KA3 2UD (Marianne Partyka): Contemporary south-facing garden established in 2018 with views out to farmland and Arran beyond. This exposed garden has been designed over two levels to negotiate the sloped site. The raised patio is surrounded by a number of raised beds and borders filled with hardy evergreen shrubs and perennials for all year round interest. The largest of the raised beds, bordering the lower lawn, is filled with herbaceous perennials and grasses contrasted with pops of colour from a variety of cottage plants, seasonal bulbs and bedding.

39 Langmuir Quadrant Kilmaurs KA3 2UA (Mr and Mrs R Vosseler): A small west-facing garden in a new estate was created in spring 2017. The garden is mainly herbaceous perennial plants with roses and evergreen shrubs. A slate path with slate edging meanders through garden. Excellent views of countryside over to Arran. The front garden displays larger perennial plants. The main objective of the garden is to produce cut flowers for the house from April to October. Many of the plants are from cuttings and divided stock from our previous house.

5 Kirkton Road Kilmaurs KA3 2NW (Mr F Murray): A small burn runs through this one-acre garden. Informal planting lies to the south, fairly steeply banked with specimen trees and short woodland walk. The north side is laid out in formal lawns, edged by beech hedging and shrub plantations, divided by dry stone dykes. Visitors will find a 17th century dovecot which once served The Tour as a larder. To the back of the house lies the working garden, with polytunnel for roses, dahlias and chrysanthemums.

Directions: Kilmaurs village is to the northwest of Kilmarnock and south of Stewarton. From Glasgow or Ayr on the M77 follow signs to Kilmaurs. B751 from Fenwick to Kilmaurs and B769 from Irvine to Kilmaurs. From Kilmaurs Railway Station (KA3 2TU), turn left onto Crofthead Road, turn left at signs for Langmuir Quadrant, where there is a car park.

Other details: Entrance by ticket from email above, tele 07881 621626 or Eventbrite link (yellow button above). The route round the gardens will be well signed. Look for the usual yellow posters with arrows. Your booking will show you which garden we are asking you to start at. There is plenty of parking at both areas. You can walk the route, but just as easily you can move your vehicle from one point to the other. Refreshments and plants are available at the gardens near the railway - please bring cash.
