Gartnavel Royal’s hidden walled garden forms part of the original 200-year-old hospital and was the private garden of the hospital’s superintendent. The basic infrastructure was restored six years ago by the Green Exercise Partnership with new raised beds and growing spaces being installed. It is cared for by a group of loyal volunteers and is an oasis of calm for hospital patients, staff, visitors and the public. We do a little bit of everything at Gartnavel; in collaboration with our TCV friends, we grow both edibles and ornamentals and, as a hospital garden, we feature lots of sensory and medicinal plants too.
Directions: From Great Western Road (car, bus or foot): Enter Gartnavel Hospital site and turn right at the traffic lights onto Shelley Road. Follow yellow SGS Open signs, continue past pond and beyond car park on your left; at the fork bear left up the hill. Pass The Calman Centre on your left as you enter a wooded area. Continue up the hill to T junction, turn right along the front of West House and park in the spaces there. Once parked continue to follow the signs to the gardens at the rear of West House.
