In this facilitated discussion, artists of all kinds are invited to discuss their experiences of self-tokenising when art intersects with capitalism/external audiences. Led by cartoonist Kaitlin Chan, the discussion will focus on how the kinds of stories we want to tell, and the stories we are being asked (or paid) to tell, can diverge. People of less-represented identities working in the freelance creative economy can be pressured to capitalise or tokenise our traumatic or identity-related experiences to make work that "goes viral" or follows an expected narrative. But so many of us also want to make work about things other than our identities, to not feel the burden of representing a broader group.
This guided discussion was first led by Kaitlin in February 2021 and is being re-staged to invite more folks who feel strongly about their identity and their art-making to share their experiences.
This event is open to all but will centre and prioritise people of colour. Please be mindful of this when deciding to attend and in your participation.
This event is part of Govanhill International Festival.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
