Autumn is a time of mixed emotions: the fiery beauty of red and ochre trees belies the fading life in their branches, while bountiful harvests give way to the bleakness of winter. In the wake of the pandemic, our first GCF concert in two years echoes this duality—both in timing, and in emotion. Reflecting on these opposing sentiments, Scottish clarinettist Ross Montgomery joins the world-renowned Edinburgh Quartet for a poignant yet uplifting performance of Brahms and James MacMillan.
On the evening of 6 July 1988, a fire broke out on the Piper Alpha off-shore oil and gas platform located in the North Sea, quickly consuming the entire structure. Written as a memorial to the 167 lives lost in the disaster, James MacMillan’s Tuireadh draws on traditional Scottish laments and Gaelic psalmody to capture the sense of grief surrounding the tragedy. Brahms threads a similar melancholy throughout his clarinet quintet, but rhapsodic gestures and wild, restless energy reveal sparks of life, desperate to burst into flame. Reflective yet vivacious, this pairing makes an expressive tribute to the emotional turmoil of the past eighteen months.
