When they draw the map of authentic Americana, historians may not previously have thought of using marker pins for the cities of Leith, Edinburgh and Dundee. Now they'll have too, in order to record the rapid rise of Roseanne Reid.
Following a couple of acclaimed EP releases, Trails — the debut album by the Scottish troubadour and eldest daughter of The Proclaimers' Craig Reid — announced the official arrival of a singular new voice in folk-roots / Americana music. It was recorded in Brooklyn with an A-team of players expertly corralled by the album's producer and an artist from fine musical stock of his own, Teddy Thompson.
“Teddy is very sympathetic to this genre, what works and what doesn't, and he's got the experience in both areas,” says Reid of her producer. “He's got such an unbelievable ear for these things. It was amazing to watch how he works. I feel very fortunate to have had him on board.”
The album was met with across the board approval from UK press including The Sun (****) , Uncut (8/10) and Times Culture , the latter also including the record in their end of year “Best Of’ listings”
Roseanne toured the album throughout the year following the release, supporting such luminaries as Kathy Mattea, Ricky Ross, Dave Alvin & Jimmy Dale Gilmour and the late Justin Townes Earle. Festivals in 2019 included both The Black Deer festival and The Long road as well as a trip to Nashville to play three shows at the annual Americana Festival there.
Whilst in Nashville, Roseanne recorded The September Tapes which included her own sublime version of the Miley Cyrus song “Malibu” and became her first release of 2020.
Lockdown and cancelled tours (Teddy Thompson, The Wandering Hearts ) in 2020 saw Roseanne do a series of popular live streams from her garden through the summer. Her interest in horticulture inspired her to enrol in a degree course whilst also becoming very adept at recording at home. These two new skills inspired the new E.P ‘Horticulture’, a collection of four new songs written and recorded during the confines of Covid.
The first single from Horticulture, the stark and beautiful ‘You Underestimate Me’ was released earlier this year.
