After a landmark year in 2021, including a hugely acclaimed second album, Wary + Strange, her Grand Old Opry debut and three Americana Music Award nominations, Tennessean singer-songwriter Amythyst Kiah returns to Celtic Connections on an exhilarating creative roll. Where earlier releases centred in turn on old-time roots sounds and indie/alt-rock, Wary + Strange unites and transcends these contrasting artistic wellsprings, expressing Kiah’s defiant self-realisation both musically and personally.
Heal & Harrow is a new multidisciplinary performance (and forthcoming album) by singer/harpist Rachel Newton and fiddler Lauren MacColl, paying tribute to the victims of Scotland’s 16th and 17th century witch trials. Drawing on stories they commissioned from author Mairi Kidd, each inspired by individual women accused of witchcraft and characters from folklore, the two award-winning musicians interweave instrumental and vocal music, spoken word and visual projections, exploring the trials’ cultural and political context as well as modern-day parallels.
